Empowering Job Seekers: Navigating the Future with AI
Overview
Robin AI, an innovative company focused on leveraging AI and automation, collaborates with Rutgers University to enhance the job-seeking process for Americans. As UXD graduate students, we have been tasked with developing human-centered research and designs to create an intuitive, integrated job-seeking experience for users.

Problem
Job seekers need to apply to nearly 80 positions to get a single interview due to global competition. The job application process is complex and disorganized, leading to frustration and missed opportunities.
Goal
We aimed to design an application flow utilizing AI to offer strategic follow-ups and support, making job-seeking more manageable and effective.

Pain Points
Their frustrations were mostly with getting rejections and wanting guidance or expertise on how to tackle filling out applications that don’t get rejected in the first round.
AI Tools Usage
Some respondents had used AI tools to assist with tasks like writing cover letters or enhancing resumes, though there were mixed reviews about their effectiveness.
Expectations
Expect guidance or expertise on how to tackle filling out applications.
There was also a significant interest in AI's potential to provide personalized assistance and automate repetitive tasks
Ideation
Based on extensive user research, we developed a persona and journey map to deeply understand the challenges and needs of job seekers. This process illuminated key opportunities for an integrated app solution where our persona (Emily) can apply in one click, keep track of her job applications, improve her resume or edit according to the job description, and prep for interviews.
Design Studio
I began with rapid sketching sessions lasting five minutes, to explore diverse ideas quickly. After generating a range of sketches, our entire UX team consolidated these into a single set, selecting the best ideas from each iteration. This method helped refine our ideas into a cohesive semi-final wireframe. The purpose of this approach was to foster creativity and efficiency. Then we created wireframes according to our final sketching.
Prototype
Then we created high-fidelity prototypes based on the wireframes, focusing on three flows:
Smart Resume Analysis and Position Matching
Our interactive prototype streamlines job applications by allowing users to upload their resumes for AI-driven analysis and scoring. It automatically extracts and stores resume details to offer personalized job recommendations, enhancing match accuracy and improving job search efficiency.
Swipe-to-Discover Job Matching
Our second interaction feature employs a swipeable card format for job listings, enhancing the s with browsing efficiency, and engaging user interaction. It includes friend-recommended positions, offering a trusted, streamlined experience.
Filter & Search
The third interaction in our prototype focuses on an efficient, three-step application process:
1. Resume Optimization: AI automatically optimizes and pre-fills the application form using data from the user's previously uploaded resume. Recognizing concerns about AI-generated content quality, I provide options to either manually edit the AI-optimized resume or use their original upload.
2. Cover Letter Generation: The system automatically generates a cover letter tailored to the job position and user's profile. Users have the flexibility to modify this draft or upload a personally crafted cover letter.
3. Review and Submit: Allows thorough review before submission.
This approach not only simplifies the application process but also adapts to user preferences for control and customization.
User Testing & Outcomes
Opportunities
Develop swipe gestures between job cards
Build friend-recommended job card feature
Add filters for job search & resume AI suggestions
Build application tracker feature
Praise
Easy to understand
Recognizable layout and approach
Unique features
“I see this like a dating app, where you can love a job or say no to a job you’re not interested in.”
“Compared to other job platforms, you don’t really see this friend- recommended job feature.”
My Learnings
All ideas presented hold relevance and merit careful consideration, especially regarding the use of AI. It's crucial to balance innovation with user trust and transparency to ensure the AI enhancements truly benefit and resonate with users.
